CBD stands for cannabidiol. CBD can be found in both the hemp and marijuana plants. By interacting with our own endocannabinoid system, CBD has a variety of therapeutic effects. CBD can decrease anxiety, decrease inflammation, modify pain perception, suppress appetite, and may even have anti-cancer effects. Unlike THC, another plant-derived cannabinoid, CBD has no psychoactive effects- it will not make you sleepy or “high.” CBD and CBD oil come in a variety of formulations. While CBD can now be found in anything from coffee to aroma therapy, the most effective way to achieve the medicinal benefits from CBD are through using CBD oil. CBD oil is extracted directly from plants and can be ingested in capsules or used by dropping the oil directly under the tongue. CBD Oil drops are also called “tincture.”
What conditions can be treated by CBD and CBD Oil?
While there are limited studies on CBD and CBD Oil, CBD can be used treat a variety of medical conditions. Prescription CBD Oil (Epidiolex) has now been FDA approved for the treatment of seizures. While there are limited studies using natural CBD and CBD oil, it has been successfully used to treat pain, anxiety, insomnia, reduce the risk of diabetes, aid in weight loss, and even reduce the risk of cancer.
What is the Difference between CBD and Marijuana?
CBD and CBD oil can be extracted from both marijuana and a related plant called hemp. Marijuana and hemp are very similar plants, but unlike marijuana, the hemp plant has very little THC (less than 0.3%). Because THC can cause psychoactive effects (make you high) and is used recreationally, marijuana is illegal in many states. However, more and more states are legalizing medical marijuana. Medical marijuana can be obtained in states where it is legal by registering with that state and being certified by a registered physician. (Dr. Matthew Mintz is also one of the few physicians in Maryland and D.C. that can certify qualifying patients to receive medical marijuana.) As a medicine, there is really no difference between marijuana derived CBD and hemp derived CBD. However, because hemp is has very little THC, hemp is considered legal everywhere in the United States and does not require certification to obtain. In addition, likely due to its legal status, hemp derived CBD is generally much less expensive than CBD from marijuana. In addition to lower cost, other reasons patients consider hemp based CBD include patient needing to travel, since medical marijuana is federally illegal and could be confiscated (or worse) by TSA, and patients who may need to be tested for drugs for their job.
Where Can I Get Hemp Based CBD and CBD Oil?
While hemp derived CBD and CBD Oil is legal in the United States, it is currently unregulated by the FDA. Due to this fact many large retailers like CVS or GNC will only sell CBD cream, since creams are viewed differently by the FDA than pills or liquids. While there are a few retail stores that sell hemp derived CBD, many people purchase hemp based CBD online. In both cases, patients need to be very careful, since all hemp based CBD is not regulated. Unlike regulated medical marijuana and marijuana derived CBD sold at the legal dispensaries which you can be assured of quality and content, hemp derived CBD has wide variability due to its lack of regulation. In 2015-2017, the FDA obtained hemp based CBD from several online companies and not only found that the amount of CBD listed was inaccurate, but also found that some products claiming to be CBD had no CBD at all! If you choose to purchase hemp based CBD either in retail stores or online, you need to ensure that it comes from a reputable source, is full spectrum, and most importantly that it is verified by an independent lab to ensure that you know exactly what you are getting. Due to the fact the purchasing high-quality, independently verified hemp based CBD can be complex for patients, Dr. Matthew Mintz is now offering CBD oil tinctures and capsules at prices that are lower than dispensaries, local stores, or online. These can be purchased in his office or can be purchased online
